…As Commuters Celebrate Price Drop
Commuters across the country have something to rejoice as transport fares are set to plummet from May 24, courtesy of the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU).
The anticipated drop in fares comes on the back of steady fuel prices and the Cedi’s strength against the dollar, with the exchange rate currently standing at 1:12.30p.
In a coordinated effort, the Ghana Union of Traders and Association (GUTA) has also called on its members to align their pricing in harmony with the Cedi’s gains.
Furthermore, companies dealing in electrical appliances have joined the price-cutting party with initiatives like the ‘Cedi apicki’, leading to substantial reductions in prices across various products.
As a result, a jumbo gallon of vegetable oil that once carried a GHc1,200 price tag can now be snagged for just over GHc800 at selected stores. Additionally, cement prices have tumbled from over GHc120 to a steal at GHc82 per bag by select cement manufacturers.
This groundbreaking announcement comes following a pivotal meeting between various transport organizations and the Transport Ministry on Wednesday, May 20, 2025.
Samuel Amoah, the eloquent Public Relations Officer (PRO), announced the unanimous decision reached during the gathering among the GPRTU, GRTCC, Concerned Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers, True Drivers, and IGRTU.
He assured that although certain aspects of their operations await adjustments, the pact to reduce fares was ironclad in synchronization with the Cedi’s trajectory.
The spirited agreement culminated in a resolute promise to curtail transport fares by an impressive 15%, set to kick in this Saturday, May 24.
Nonetheless, the GPRTU advocates for peaceful resolution in case of non-compliance, urging the public to avoid confrontations and report any errant drivers to the authorities.
Alhaji Abass Moro emphasized the importance of upholding the law and vowed to weed out any rogue elements tarnishing the integrity of their group.
Buckle up, Ghana, for a smoother ride ahead as the nation welcomes this wave of relief in the transport sector.
