Defamation Lawsuit Filed Against Captain Smart and Media General Limited

A defamation lawsuit has been filed in the High Court of Justice by Tettey Yohunu, Deputy Inspector General of Police, against Blessed Godsbrian Smart Yirenkyi, popularly known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited.

According to court documents, the plaintiff, Tettey Yohuno, has accused Captain Smart of making defamatory statements on his Onua Maakye radio and television programs, which were later published by Media General Limited across various social media platforms.

The statements allegedly implied that Tettey Yohuno had engaged in activities aimed at destabilizing Ghana’s constitutional order, including involvement in planning a coup d’etat.

Captain Smart further suggested that Yohuno had used political connections for his appointment as Deputy IG and was paying individuals to influence his promotion as the Inspector General of Police.

Yohunu categorically denies these allegations, stating that they are false, baseless, and have damaged his reputation and professional standing within the Ghana Police Service.

He is seeking a declaration from the court that the statements made by Captain Smart and published by Media General Limited are defamatory, as well as general damages for defamation, an injunction to prevent further defamation, a public retraction of the statements, and a formal apology.

The plaintiff’s legal representative, Eddie Maccarthy Esq., of Maccarthy & Associates, emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and their impact on Yohunu’s personal and professional life.

Maccarthy stated that Yohunu is seeking justice and a restoration of his good name through the legal proceedings.

The case is set to proceed in the High Court of Justice in ACCRA, with both defendants, Captain Smart and Media General Limited, expected to respond to the allegations within the stipulated time frame.

The public awaits further developments in this defamation lawsuit that has captured the attention of many.
