Charles Nii Armah Mensah, the embattled artist, who was arrested and detained by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) appears to be acting evasive with questioned being asked of him.
The artist popularly known as Shatta Wale, who has been in the grips of EOCO since yesterday, Wednesday, August 20, has failed to give credible information concerning a 2019 Lamborghini Urus the he acquired locally.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States (US) and it Justice Department have flagged the vehicle as proceed of a $4 million crime involving one Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian, who is currently serving a jail term in that country.
According to a press statement from the Office issued on Thursday, August 21, the president of the Shatta Movement, told investigators that he does not remember the specific person he purchased the luxurious vehicle.
He insists that he got it from the “street” which appears not to make sense to officers.
He adds that, the person in question who he gave his name only as Zak contacted him on social media site to begin the transaction process but even that he has thrown the Zak’s contact away.
“So far, Charles Nii Armah Mensah has been unable to identify the person from who, he purchased the said Lamborghini Urus vehicle except to say that he purchased it from the “Street” and from someone possibly called “ZAK” who may have contacted him on WhatsApp but whose identity he does not know and whose contact he has thrown away”.
The statement signed released by the head Public Relations on behalf of the acting Executive Director continued to say that “So far, Charles Nii Armah Mensah does not also possess any documentation in terms of receipt or transfer documents which shows that he owns or purchased”.
According to the anti-graft agency, their investigation forms part of a larger investigations centering on possible co-conspirators in the $4 million crime which occurred in the US involving some Ghanaians and recoveries of the proceeds of the crime.
The vehicle which has been a subject of a court case in the States was seized in May 2025, after officials of EOCO stormed Shatta Wale’s house in search of it.
Even though the operation was done on the quiet, it was the artist that broke the news through social media posts and Tiktok live on August 5 after the exercise was carried out in May.
Recalling events that have unfolded over the period, the EOCO statement said the investigations commenced after the Bureau and the Justice Department asked them to track the vehicle and conduct local investigations in request of uncovering possible co-conspirators in Ghana.
It said EOCO began looking for the vehicle until it was identified and seized in or around May 2025 from dancehall artist.
“On August 15, 2025, a United States District Court of the Eastern District of Kentucky, Central Division of Lixington in a criminal case of the United States of America vrs. Nana Kwabena Anuah issued an order Forfeiting Substitute Asset on the Lamborghini Urus in question, authoring the US Government to take possession of the said vehicle in Ghana as restitution for the crime.”
Earlier, on August 5, Shatta Wale publicly claimed that he purchased the vehicle in question at a price US$150, 000 from an unidentified party and so EOCO invited him to report on August 13, 2025 which rescheduled for August 20 to assist in investigations.
“Counsel for Charles Nii Armah Mensah, indicated to EOCO officers that they would prefer to report at 11a. EOCO readjusted its schedule to align with their time. Shortly before 11am, Counsel for Nii Armah called EOCO to claim that his client was not available and that he was also busy. EOCO indicated to Counsel that he and his client were expected to report as scheduled”.
After the back and forth, the controversial artist arrived at the Office around 3pm and insisted that he was not going to speak until his counsel who was not available shows up. That request was granted because it was within his right and so they two parties waited until 5pm when the counsel appeared. Even though official hours was 8am to 5pm, the entire operational team waited and conducted the interrogation which lasted up to 9pm. Officers in the end left the office around 11pm. He was immediately Shatta Wale was granted a bail of GHS10. 000. 000 with two sureties to be justified.
“Once the sureties are presented hopefully this morning, EOCO will undertake surety inspection, which is a standard protocol, after which Charles Nii Armah Mensah would leave custody”.
