An ultimatum issued by the Overlord of Gonja land, Yagbonwura Biikutu Jewu Soale l, to his paramount chiefs on 11th August 2024 to expel suspected Burkinabe rebels from the area expired on 1st September 2024.

However, the alleged rebels not only remain entrenched but are reportedly being reinforced by newcomers from Burkina Faso.

The open defiance of Yagbonwura’s directive is attributed to the perceived support that certain appointees of President Akufo-Addo, notably Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor, are providing to the alleged rebels.

This defiance is fueling tensions among the youth of Gonja land, who are reportedly brewing with discontent. In a cautionary piece, a concerned youth from Damongo, Ibrahim Mustafa Njo-Amoncha, warns of an impending clash if the government fails to act decisively against the suspected rebels.

“There is a palpable sense of unease in the region, particularly in the central Gonja district, with growing speculations of a potential violent confrontation between the alleged rebels and the local populace, particularly the disgruntled youth,” Mr. Amoncha expressed.

He further accuses government agencies of managing the situation disingenuously, noting that the government cannot evade culpability for the looming crisis.

Allegations persist that the ruling party is complicit in facilitating the incursion of these rebels into the country, purportedly to manipulate electoral outcomes in the upcoming December 2024 polls.

Reports suggest that some of the alleged rebels have been clandestinely registered and issued Ghanaian identification cards, raising concerns about their integration into Ghana’s political landscape.

Mr. Amoncha also disclosed that seven of them have been observed undergoing rigorous military training in an isolated bush within the eastern Gonja municipality.

The mysterious sustenance of the alleged rebels, who are often seen in remote areas without visible food supplies, raises suspicions about undisclosed support networks.

Accusations have been made implicating Buipewura Jinapor ll in facilitating the rebels’ presence under the pretext of their refugee status, despite uncertainties surrounding their entry timeline.

Amid escalating tensions, Mr. Amoncha laments the alleged intimidation and obstruction faced by Savannah youth, particularly the Buipe Youth for Peace and Development, by the Central Gonja District Security Council and Savannah Regional Security Council.

He elucidates on the authorities’ threats to deem peaceful demonstrations against the suspected rebels as acts of rebellion, thereby justifying harsh security responses under the guise of maintaining order.

The unfolding saga in Savannah region underscores a pressing need for transparent investigation and accountable governance practices to avert a potential crisis.

The situation remains fluid, with the underlying complexities poised to unravel as mounting pressures demand swift and effective interventions.
