Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has confirmed that eight individuals have been arrested related to the recent violent events during the Ablekuma North by-election.
During a meeting with the Police leadership and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the IGP stated that the suspects are currently being processed and will soon face legal action.
“As of yesterday, I have 8 suspects. Eight suspects have been arrested, they are being processed, and according to the regional commander, they will be presented in court tomorrow or Friday,” Mr. Yohuno explained.
He assured that the Police are committed to ensuring justice. “We are making progress, and we will ensure that justice is served to those who did not perform their duties professionally,” he added.
The IGP also addressed concerns regarding the police officer who assaulted a journalist during the Ablekuma North rerun.
He clarified that, contrary to rumors, the officer has not been transferred but has been interdicted.
“We quickly withdrew this policeman, and we had to interdict him. When you are interdicted, your uniform is taken away, and you cannot return to work. There is a rumor that we transferred the policeman to another station, which is not true,” he stated.
He mentioned that the Ghana Journalists Association has completed its investigation into the officer’s behavior.
“That investigation has been completed and given to me. This means a service inquiry will be conducted regarding his conduct, and appropriate sanctions will follow,” he explained.
He also disclosed that disciplinary measures will be implemented shortly. “Just yesterday, I got a report from the professional standards department stating that we can proceed with disciplinary action via our service orders against the police officer,” the IGP mentioned.
