Private legal practitioner Kofi Bentil has described President John Dramani Mahama as an “imperial president.”
He argued that the President has full control over Parliament and the judiciary—institutions that ordinarily should keep the government in check. Instead, he claimed, the president now has complete control over them.
“Today, President Mahama is becoming an imperial president. What do I mean by that? He has total control over Parliament and the judiciary; he has muted them. Today, as we speak, President Mahama is enjoying extreme popularity,” Mr. Bentil said on The Key Points on TV3, Saturday, September 27.
He was reacting to a poll conducted by the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, which indicated that Ghanaians prefer a younger person to lead the country going into the 2028 general elections.
According to the poll, 64 percent of respondents said they want a young person who reflects their youthful exuberance.
“The respondents want somebody who is young,” Mr. Bentil explained. “They are looking at the recent past—Nana Akufo-Addo was 73 when he became president—but the people want someone who reflects their youthful exuberance.”
Asked what age bracket constitutes “young,” he admitted: “I didn’t define what age bracket they mean by young. I will go back to the republic and ask them what they mean by young. The preferences are going towards younger leaders.”
Reacting on the same program, private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu described the findings as encouraging.
“It is heartwarming to see that the majority of the people agree we should have young leaders. The older people have had their time; they should allow the younger ones to take over,” he said.
