Highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has stirred public conversation after openly expressing his desire to vote for President John Mahama should the President be permitted to run again after completing his current and final term. According to the Otoolege hitmaker, President Mahama’s performance so far has been exceptional, and he would gladly show his appreciation at the ballot box if the Constitution allowed the President to seek another term.
In an interview, Amponsah explained that the President’s achievements within a short period have convinced him that the country is moving in the right direction. “If President Mahama is coming for another term, I will vote for him. For the small things I have seen, I would be the first person to lead and say we are going to vote for him. I want to be factual—so far, I believe we are steering the country the right way,” he emphasized.
The musician made these remarks during a visit to the offices of GhanaWeb. Although Ghana’s 1992 Constitution limits presidents to two four-year terms, some have argued that this provision should be reviewed. Amponsah noted that while the Constitution cannot currently be bent, he personally wishes Mahama could continue.
Interestingly, Ofori Amponsah has long been associated with the UP-NPP tradition, having previously declared firm support for the New Patriotic Party and its former flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. However, he now says he has reached a point where performance matters more to him than party loyalty. “I was born into the UP-NPP tradition, but now I can choose anybody. If you are NDC and you are good, I’ll vote for you. If you are NPP and good, I’ll vote for you. I am apolitical—I follow who performs,” he stated.
While he acknowledges that first years in office often appear favourable, Ofori believes Mahama deserves commendation and urges him to continue building a strong legacy. President Mahama, however, has made it clear that he does not intend to violate the Constitution and plans to retire honourably after 2028.
