The tragic event at the El-Wak Sports Complex in Accra on November 12, 2025, has raised significant concerns about the safety and management of large events in Ghana.
As the country grieves the loss of six young lives, it is essential to examine the factors surrounding the tragedy and strive to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The incident, which took place during a military recruitment exercise, has underscored the necessity for more effective and safer recruitment procedures. The Ghana Armed Forces has initiated an investigation into the event, and it is vital that the results lead to changes that will avert future tragedies.
Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has requested divine strength and solace for the affected families and the nation as a whole.

“May the Almighty God grant the souls of the departed eternal rest in His peaceful bosom, and may He comfort our nation in this time of grief,” she expressed during a visit to some of the victims at the 37 Military Hospital.
As we mourn these young lives, we must also take steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur. The El-Wak tragedy serves as a powerful reminder of the need to prioritize safety and security in all areas of our lives, including large events like military recruitment exercises.
Key Recommendations: the Ghana Armed Forces should focus on crowd control and safety measures in future recruitment events; government should assess and modify the recruitment process to avoid overcrowding and guarantee that proper safety measures are implemented; and event organizers must be held responsible for ensuring the safety and security of participants.
By implementing these measures, we can work towards establishing a safer and more secure environment for all Ghanaians.
