Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is not taking betrayal lightly. The firebrand New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful has launched a blistering attack on his former protégé, ex-Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, accusing him of political treachery for backing Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the party’s flagbearer race.
In a charged address to delegates in the Central Region, Agyapong didn’t mince words. “He will face natural justice,” he declared, visibly pained by what he described as a deep personal and political betrayal. “I picked him from nowhere. Today, he’s turned his back on me for someone who was nowhere when I was fighting for his appointment.”
Agyapong recounted how, in 2017, he personally intervened at the Jubilee House to secure the Transport Ministry for Asiamah—an appointment originally earmarked for Cecilia Dapaah. According to Agyapong, Dapaah had already received her letter when he and the late Central Regional Chairman, Robert Kutin Jnr., stormed the presidency to demand recognition for the Central Region.
The region had delivered 19 out of 23 parliamentary seats but had no substantive minister. “Apart from Hawa Koomson, who was given a ministry no one knew, we had nothing,” Agyapong fumed. “We told the President, ‘Give Transport to Asiamah.’ And he did.”
The fallout was swift. Dapaah, who later resigned in disgrace over a cash scandal, reportedly never forgave Agyapong. “She hasn’t spoken to me since,” he said. “But I did it for Asiamah.”
Agyapong’s anger is rooted in history. He claims to have discovered Asiamah during a tense parliamentary primary in Upper Denkyira West, where a delegate died from suspected poisoning. “I told him to step down and follow me. I made him who he is,” Agyapong said. “Now he’s bold enough to campaign against me? God will speak for me.”
In a dramatic twist, Benjamin Ayeh the very man Asiamah once contested declared his support for Agyapong at the same event. Agyapong, visibly moved, promised to make Ayeh “richer than Asiamah” as a reward for loyalty.
This isn’t Agyapong’s first public execution of a former ally. In 2023, he lashed out at Alfred Obeng-Boateng, MP for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, accusing him of blocking delegates from meeting him and questioning his presidential credentials. Agyapong had expected solidarity, having defended Obeng-Boateng during the BOST missing oil saga.
As the NPP’s flagbearer race heats up, Agyapong’s campaign is increasingly defined by loyalty tests and personal vendettas. His message is clear: betrayal will be punished, and gratitude is non-negotiable.
Whether his curses land or not, one thing is certain—Ken Agyapong is fighting this race not just with policy, but with memory, muscle, and a long list of political IOUs.
