The Ghana Police Service has escalated its intelligence-led operations across the nation to combat robbery and other violent crimes, resulting in the apprehension of several suspects associated with two significant robbery cases in various regions of the country.
During a press conference in Accra, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) stated that these operations are part of a comprehensive national strategy designed to ensure the safety of lives, protect property, and uphold public security.
A notable success included the capture of seven suspects linked to a highway robbery that took place on the Tamale–Buipe Highway in July 2025. The victim, a public official, was assaulted by armed robbers and deprived of personal items such as mobile phones, cash, electronic gadgets, and other valuables.
After weeks of intelligence collection, a specialized anti-robbery unit traced one of the stolen mobile devices to the Savannah Region in January 2026. This finding initiated a series of arrests in Salaga and Tamale, revealing a broader criminal network involved in the robbery.
A search executed during the operation led to the recovery of numerous dangerous weapons, ammunition, stolen electronic devices, motorbikes, and other materials believed to have been utilized in criminal endeavors. The police also seized substances suspected to be narcotics and tools typically associated with armed robbery. Further investigations disclosed that one of the suspects had a prior conviction for robbery.
Authorities report that efforts are continuing to capture additional accomplices who are believed to be evading arrest and to retrieve a weapon that remains in the gang’s possession
In a different operation, five individuals have been detained in relation to a violent robbery that took place in Nkassem, located in the Ahafo Region. This incident, which transpired in December 2025, featured a coordinated attack on a police station, financial institutions, and businesses along the Goso–Tepa Road.
During the assault, the attackers obstructed the road, discharged firearms, injured an employee at a cocoa purchasing company, and fled with significant amounts of cash as well as two AK-47 service rifles.
Through persistent intelligence gathering and forensic investigations, anti-robbery units apprehended the suspects at various locations throughout the country. Some of the suspects confessed to their involvement during questioning. Authorities indicate that the suspected leader and other accomplices, who are thought to be in possession of the stolen firearms, are still being sought.
The Police Service has called on the public to stay alert, prioritize personal security, and exercise caution in both online and offline environments. Citizens are also encouraged to remain vigilant while traveling, particularly at night and in secluded areas, and to report any suspicious behavior to the nearest police station.
The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department praised the officers involved in the operations for their professionalism and commitment and expressed gratitude to the public and the media for their ongoing support in the battle against crime.
