The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has shown its willingness to work with the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Traders Association to tackle issues raised about the unfair burden on spare parts traders due to the new Value Added Tax system.
This commitment was communicated in a press release from the authority’s Communication and Public Affairs department on Wednesday, February 10, 2026.
The association states that while they are dedicated to meeting their tax responsibilities, they are concerned about what they call inconsistent valuation practices at the ports, high import fees, and the overall cost of doing business. They believe these issues are impacting profit margins and, in some instances, forcing traders to pass costs onto consumers.
In reply, GRA recognized these concerns and highlighted that the Authority is not just a revenue collection agency but also a partner in national growth. They emphasized that engaging in dialogue with stakeholders is essential for enhancing compliance and ensuring fairness in the tax system.
The Authority also pointed out that the shift from a 4% Flat Rate to 2% will not lead to higher prices, and the increase in the VAT registration threshold will not cause price and market distortions; instead, it will help lower the cost of doing business in Ghana, among other advantages.
GRA explained that the price hikes currently being seen are due to a transitional pricing mistake—the failure to exclude now-deductible input VAT from cost calculations—and not a result of the policy itself.
The Authority has already formed a joint technical team with the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) to assist businesses during this transition, providing practical advice on VAT record-keeping, input tax claims, and accurate pricing.
The GRA is prepared to offer this support to the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Traders Association and any other trade group that needs help.
GRA also encouraged spare parts dealers to take advantage of its taxpayer education programmes and digital platforms designed to simplify tax filing and payment processes.
