The Ghana Police Service have arrested the gang leader of armed robbers, who attacked Berekum Chelsea team, resulting in the tragic death of a player, Dominic Frimpong.
The suspect, 25-year old Mohammed Ahmed alias ‘Can Do’, was apprehended days ago after a gun battle with the police.
The police in a statement said one suspect Gideon Bawa was injured during a shootout and is receiving medical treatment.
“The Police have arrested the gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery incident that led to the death of the Berekum Chelsea footballer.”
‘i Can Do’ sustained wound to his abdomen during a shootout with police when attempts were made to arrest him and one other suspect at their hideout at Atimatim, Kumasi.
He is currently receiving treatment at the hospital at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital under police supervision. The other suspects are Dauda, Huefe and A. T.
The team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex 1996 at Samreboi when six armed men blocked their bus and opened fire, forcing the driver off the road as players and officials fled for safety.
The VIP bus carrying about 30 players and officials — came under the attack at around 10:30pm.
In the chaos, the driver veered off the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road near Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region, into nearby bushes while players and staff fled for safety.
Frimpong, 20, who fell as the main casualty, was shot in the head following which he died. Several teams, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) fanatics in the game of soccer, as well as the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, have expressed deepest condolences to the team and family of the deceased.
