Mounting frustration has reached a boiling point as the Unposted Environmental Health Officers and Assistants Association of Ghana threatens a decisive demonstration on May 12, citing years of stalled recruitment and government inertia.
The association revealed that its members have languished without postings and financial clearance since 2021, despite sustained engagements with state authorities. Patience, they warn, has finally worn thin.
In a strongly worded statement issued May 4, 2026, the group referenced a December 15, 2025, pledge by the Ministry of Local Government to escalate their grievances to Cabinet. Nearly five months on, no feedback has materialized.
“It has now been almost five months without any communication, and this silence is deeply concerning given the public health challenges Ghana faces,” the statement said.
The officers condemned what they described as glaring inequities in public sector recruitment. While environmental health professionals remain sidelined, other sectors have secured major hiring approvals.
“We have been informed that the Ministry of Local Government cites constraints from the Ministry of Finance, that the fiscal budget space is too limited to grant us financial clearance. However, we note with disappointment that financial clearance has been granted for the recruitment of 20,000 teachers and 16,000 nurses. This disparity is unacceptable and has angered our members,” it said.
The association issued an ultimatum, vowing to march on the Ministry of Local Government if their demands remain unanswered.
“In light of this, we will hold a demonstration on May 12, 2026, at the Ministry of Local Government to demand answers and accountability,” it said, adding that members will continue to push for their employment if the situation remains unresolved.
The group insists that deploying environmental health officers is not negotiable amid Ghana’s persistent sanitation and public health burdens, and is pressing government to act with urgency.
