The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has announced the formation of a Steering Committee tasked with leading the implementation of the 24-Hour Economy initiative in Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry. The Committee convened its inaugural meeting to establish a strategic roadmap for both short and long-term objectives.
Appointed by President John Dramani Mahama, the Steering Committee, operating under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and the 24-Hour Secretariat, is entrusted with the development of regulatory frameworks, strategic plans, and implementation timelines to realize the 24-hour economy throughout the downstream petroleum value chain.
Speaking at the meeting, NPA Chief Executive, Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo (Esq.), emphasized the government’s commitment to the 24-hour economy initiative, highlighting its alignment with national development goals and energy security priorities.
“We are poised to ensure that the Downstream Petroleum Sector’s 24-Hour Economy complements national development plans and enhances energy security,” Mr. Tameklo stated.
Addressing the significance of collaboration, Mr. Tameklo called for seamless coordination among security agencies to support the successful execution of the initiative.
Mr. Roland Azuvgu, representing the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat at the Presidency, announced the initiation of the programme and urged fuel retail outlets to embrace the 24-hour economy to cater to other sectors already implementing the initiative.
Meanwhile, Mr. George Nyaunu, Chairman of the Tanker Drivers Union, raised concerns about the poor condition of roads leading to depot sites, prompting an appeal to the Minister of Roads and Highways to prioritize road construction for efficient fuel transportation.
Stakeholders expressed their commitment to providing financial support and resource mobilization through Public-Private Partnerships to assist in fulfilling the Committee’s mandate. This includes overseeing the implementation of timelines, resolving institutional obstacles, and ensuring the successful rollout of the 24-hour economy.
Led by NPA Chief Executive Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo (Esq.), the Steering Committee comprises key industry figures and stakeholders, structured into three subcommittees focusing on infrastructure, regulation, and stakeholder engagement respectively.
The NPA, in collaboration with industry partners, remains steadfast in its dedication to driving sustainable energy accessibility and national development through the implementation of a 24-hour economy in the downstream petroleum sector.
