Bryan Acheampong and Bawumia Clash in Political Showdown.
Efforts to bring peace to the troubled Bawku region, torn apart by the enduring conflict between the Kusasi and Mamprusi tribes, have hit a stumbling block as tensions spill over into the NPP’s internal battle.
Contenders vying for the coveted New Patriotic Party flagbearer post are weaponizing the strife to rally support, turning the simmering conflict into a political battleground.
MP and NPP presidential hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has pinned the blame for the party’s 2024 loss on what he brands as tribal politics surrounding Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidacy.
Addressing party faithful on Saturday, August 23, the former Minister of Agriculture claimed the NPP’s choice of flagbearer alienated voters in the north.
Dr. Acheampong argued that unlike previous NPP leaders, President Kufuor and President Akufo-Addo, Dr. Bawumia was unable to clinch crucial votes because of historical grudges.
While acknowledging Dr. Bawumia’s merits, Dr. Acheampong emphasized that the timing and tribal dynamics worked against the party in 2024.
In a swift rebuttal, former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, condemned what he deems as tribal assaults from his rivals.
Calling such remarks “regrettable,” he urged for party unity instead of divisive tactics.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted his loyalty and contributions to the NPP over the years, questioning why his ethnicity was suddenly being weaponized against him.
Emphasizing the NPP’s inclusive ethos, he called for a united front to focus on the party’s shared goal of clinching victory in the upcoming 2028 elections.
