In a bid to accelerate the socio-cultural development of Somé, the Traditional Council has launched the 2025 Sométutuza under the theme, “consolidating peace and unity for socio-cultural and economic development in the Somé Traditional Area.”
Sométutuza, also known as the Somé Festival, is an annual celebration of the Chiefs and People of the Somè Traditional Area, in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
It was instituted in 1976 during the reign of Torgbiga Hor II, then Paramount Chief of the Somé Traditional Area. The festival commemorates the migration of the forefathers to their present settlement in the 17th century.
It is celebrated on the last Saturday in September each year at the Somé Traditional Area’s traditional capital, Agbozume. The People of Some Traditional areas are known as Soméawo.
The celebration brings together hundreds of Soméawo, both at home and abroad, to celebrate the unique nature of the area as their cultural heritage and to chart a path towards the socio-cultural and economic development of the area.
At a colourful launch event held at Denu on Friday July 11, 2025, Torgbiga Adamah III, the Paramount Chief (Fiaga) and President of the Somé Traditional Council called on Somèawo and all Chiefs and Queen mothers to unite and stand strongly behind him to transform the Area with developmental projects as “Somé is lagging behind in terms of social amenities.”
Torgbiga Adamah III also charged society to take their traditions seriously to ensure that the younger generation does not deviate from their culture and traditions.
He tasked the festival’s Central Planning Committee to ensure that the 2025 edition of the festival was a memorable one as it coincides with the 50th anniversary since the institution of Sométutuza and his 10th anniversary as the Paramount Chief of Somé Traditional Area.
Torgbiga Adamah III further enjoined Somé citizens both home and abroad to support this year’s festival physically and financially to make it a thrilling and memorable one.
He prayed for peace, unity and fellow-feeling among all indigenes and residents of the area, observing that society could only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
With several activities lined up for the celebrations, the 2025 edition of Sométutuza promises to be a thrilling one with a grand durbar slated for Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Somé National School park at Agbozume.
