An Accra-based Gender Violence Court has remanded Nii Baah Afful into police custody for his involvement in a domestic assault case that went viral on social media last week.
The suspect has been remanded for two weeks and will reappear before the court on 9th April 2025, according to a press release from the Ghana Police Service dated 25th March 2025.
Details of the case
Nii Baah Afful, a 29-year-old fisherman, was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command in connection with a viral video showing him assaulting a woman who was carrying an 8-month-old baby.
The incident occurred on Thursday, 20th March, 2025, at Korle Gonno, a suburb of Accra, following what police described as “a misunderstanding between the couple.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect and the victim, identified as Francisca Aryee, 21, live together and have two children. According to the police statement, the victim attempted to leave for her mother’s house when she was pursued and assaulted by the suspect.
Police response
The Police Intelligence Unit of the Accra Region arrested the suspect on 22nd March 2025, at around 5 pm. The suspect has been detained for further action, while the victim has been traced and is receiving necessary medical care and counselling.
The press release, signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng of the Public Affairs Directorate, Accra Region, emphasized that “the swift action taken by the Accra Regional Police Command demonstrates its commitment to ensuring justice and safety for all citizens.”
Domestic violence in Ghana
This case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Ghana, where despite the Domestic Violence Act passed in 2007, many cases go unreported due to societal pressures and cultural norms.
The Ghana Police Service has been working to improve its response to domestic violence cases, with specialized units being established across various commands to handle such sensitive matters.
Advocates continue to push for better implementation of existing laws and more support services for victims of domestic abuse.
