The Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, Brig. Gen. Evelyn Vivian Abraham-Kwabiah, has set the record straight, indicating that the number of casualties involved in the El-Wak Stadium stampede was 28 potential recruits.
Addressing the media, the commander stated, “I need to just get something straight. There’s erroneous information going out. The casualties we have that came through were 28 in number. Those who are dead are 6 and not 12. Those who are critical and in ICU are 5. We have 12 who are fairly critical. The rest are stable.”
President John Dramani Mahama has been briefed on the unfortunate incident. The Ghana Armed Forces has also released a statement confirming the deaths and injuries.
Meanwhile, the nationwide exercise, scheduled to take place across major centers, saw large numbers of recruits trooping to El-Wak for their examinations.
The New Republic observed that thousands of hopeful Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruits were left frustrated and exhausted at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra as the ongoing screening exercise dragged on.
