Medical and dental professionals affiliated with the esteemed Ghana Medical Association have reason to celebrate as the Ministry of Finance steps in to waive a hefty GH₵3.29 million import duty on their recently imported vehicles.
Acknowledging a plea from the Ministry of Health, Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has taken the decisive measure to exempt these dedicated professionals from import duty and VAT charges, showing solidarity with those serving on the front lines of healthcare.
In an official letter addressed to the Ghana Revenue Authority, Dr. Forson referenced a direct request from the Ministry of Health dated 22nd March 2025, marked with reference number MOH/PSC2025/LU/WVL-FU/001, seeking to relieve medical practitioners from the burden of import duties.
The Minister pointed out the Government’s prior commitment, as outlined in the 2024 Budget and Economic Policy, to provide tax waivers for public sector doctors importing vehicles, further solidifying the importance of supporting healthcare heroes.
With the Ministry of Health’s endorsement, Dr. Forson granted approval for the eligible medical professionals to proceed with clearing their vehicles without being subjected to the customary import duties and VAT charges, a significant relief during these challenging times.
However, it is imperative to note that additional fees and third-party imposts remain applicable, as Minister Forson underlined the importance of maintaining financial obligations while extending this tax relief.
Furthermore, the waiver amount will be duly recorded against the Ministry of Health’s 2025 budget, ensuring transparency and accountability in this beneficial arrangement.
“By virtue of this correspondence, the Budget Division within this Ministry will ensure that the designated taxes and duties are properly allocated to the Ministry of Health’s 2025 financial plan,” emphasized the Minister, highlighting the meticulous measures in place to implement this gesture of support for the medical community.
