First Lady Applauds Merck Foundation for Training Ghanaian Doctors

The First Lady and President of the Lordina Foundation, Lordina Dramani Mahama, has praised the Merck Foundation for its significant contributions to enhancing Ghana’s healthcare system through medical training scholarships.

In her address at the opening session of the 7th Edition of the Merck Foundation First Ladies Initiative (MFFLI) Summit 2025, the First Lady underscored the positive effects of the foundation’s initiatives on Ghanaian physicians and the nation’s health sector.

“I express my gratitude to the Merck Foundation for its unwavering commitment to fortifying healthcare systems and empowering individuals,” Mrs. Mahama remarked, recognizing the foundation’s 13 years of impactful development throughout Africa and Asia.

She pointed out the Merck Foundation’s scholarship initiative, which has awarded over 2,000 scholarships to emerging doctors from 52 nations. “I take particular pride in the fact that two hundred and ten (210) Ghanaian doctors are among the recipients,” she declared.

“I commend your commitment and the compassion you extend to numerous families back home,” she stated, highlighting the concrete effects of the training on communities throughout Ghana.

Mrs. Mahama also discussed the role of First Ladies as Ambassadors for the Merck Foundation’s ‘More Than a Mother’ campaign, which tackles critical issues such as infertility stigma and reproductive health, thereby indirectly supporting the efforts of these trained medical professionals.

She stressed the significance of collaboration, asserting that “progress is achievable when public and private entities come together.

“The First Lady expressed the Lordina Foundation’s strong desire to strengthen its partnership with the Merck Foundation to “enhance our initiatives in health and education and combat stigma throughout Ghana.”

“We will persist in crafting narratives of hope and transformation across our nations,” Mrs. Mahama affirmed.
