‘Kitchen Knife COUP’ PLOTTER Freed On GH¢2.5 Million Bail
By Prince Ahenkorah
One of the six individuals sentenced to death by hanging for attempting to overthrow the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been granted bail pending the hearing of his appeal.
The Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, granted bail to Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu, a fleet manager, in the sum of GH¢2.5 million, with two sureties to be justified. This decision allows Ofosu temporary freedom while his appeal is being heard at the Court of Appeal.
Debrah was part of a group of six who were convicted in November 2023 on charges of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason, following allegations that they planned to destabilise the state and remove the constitutionally elected government from power through violent means.
The treason trial, which has spanned several years, has been one of the most talked-about and high-profile political and security-related cases in Ghana’s recent history.
The accused persons were arrested in 2019 after security agencies uncovered what was described as a plot to overthrow the government.
According to the prosecution, intelligence gathered by the security services revealed that the accused had been mobilising weapons, producing explosives, and recruiting both military and civilian personnel to execute their plan.
The prosecution, led by the then-Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, called 13 witnesses, including seven military officers, to testify during the trial
While Debrah and five others were found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging, three other accused persons, ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli, and Corporal Seidu Abubakar, were acquitted and discharged after the court found insufficient evidence linking them to the coup plot.
