Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised alarm over the growing menace of illegal mining—commonly known as galamsey—warning that the practice is endangering Ghana’s future and threatening the country’s very survival.
Speaking at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) during the Young Commons Forum summit on Saturday, September 20, the Effutu MP described Ghana as standing “at a crossroad” due to the unchecked destruction of the environment by illegal mining activities.
“Today, our country stands at a crossroad. Galamsey is getting out of hand,” he said.
“The greed of a few who believe they have to destroy our environment to make ends meet is going unchecked. We only perhaps talk about it, but we are unable to nip it in the bud.”
Afenyo-Markin stressed that illegal mining is not just an environmental issue but a national crisis that demands urgent, collective action.
He called on Ghanaians—particularly the youth—to rise above partisan lines and speak out against the destruction being caused to water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves.
“We must all collectively talk about it, else there will be no country for us,” he cautioned.
