Ghana today, Friday, March 6, is celebrating its 69th Independence Day celebration, across the country with the main event underway at the Jubilee House, in Accra.
The event comes a year before the West African nation marks its 70th Platinum Jubilee anniversary as the first nation in the sub-Saharan African to gain independence from colonial rule from the British.
This year’s event is themed “Building prosperity; inspiring hope”. Gracing the occasion is the Prime Minister for St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Michael Drew Drew and his wife.
Also present are speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Akufo-Addo, traditional leaders, as well as ministers of state, Members of Parliament (MPs), the clergy, political parties, invited guests.
There are also pupils and students, the security services among others.
There are cultural displays drumming and dancing by students. Ghana gained independence on March 6, 1957 by first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
President John Dramani Mahama will be delivering his speech in a jiffy.
