Ofori-Atta’s Deputy Orders Sam George to Hide ‘Names’

Tempers flared and sparks flew* at Monday’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing as fiery MP Abena Osei-Asare clashed with Communications Minister Sam George in a dramatic showdown over Ghana’s economic woes.
The usually buttoned-up committee room turned into a political boxing ring when Sam George, appearing before PAC to answer questions about institutions under his ministry, took a swipe at the previous administration—blaming them for Ghana Post’s ballooning expenses.
“It’s simple,” George said. “The Akufo-Addo administration mismanaged the economy. That’s why costs are up. Just look at what Ken Ofori-Atta, Abena Osei-Asare, and Dr. Bawumia did…”
But before he could finish, Abena exploded.
“Respectfully, Minister, stop it right there!” she snapped. “Don’t be name-calling. Just answer the question!”
The room fell into stunned silence as murmurs rippled through the chamber. The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife.
The drama began when PAC member Ernest Yaw Anim grilled George over Ghana Post’s 2023 financials. While the company posted a profit after losses in 2022, its operating costs had jumped 35%, and admin expenses soared by a staggering 51.8%.
George blamed the dollar exchange rate and past economic missteps but Abena wasn’t having it.
“You’ve been here before. I’ve been where you are. That’s not how we do this,” she fired back.
Despite the heated exchange, the session continued, with George defending his ministry’s performance and Ghana Post’s operations.
The PAC sittings have become a political pressure cooker in recent weeks, with ministers and agency heads grilled over spending, strategy, and stewardship.
But Monday’s face-off? That was pure political theatre.
