GNAT sets April 30 to strike over delays in promotions

Tension is rising in Ghana’s education sector as the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has declared a nationwide strike set for Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

This decision, comes after concerns about the delayed promotions of over a thousand teachers remain unresolved.

GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, stated in an interview that they have given the Public Services Commission and the Ghana Education Service, until the end of April to address the issue, warning that these institutions will be held accountable for any fallout in May.

Despite some senior teachers being promoted, many junior teachers, have not seen any progress since 2019, leading to frustration and anger among the teaching community.

The Association is urging the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders, to act quickly to prevent disruption in schools

The scheme of service is also pending, upgrading also pending. Why must it always be like that, we are talking about reset here and we are going to help in the reset, and we are saying this should not happen again.”

With just days to the deadline, pressure is mounting for swift action to avoid a full-blown shutdown of schools across the country.
