The Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the government is making good progress in solving the ongoing problem of unpaid salaries and allowances for health workers nationwide.
Speaking to the press in Accra on Monday, October 13, Akandoh shared that the Ministry of Health has obtained financial clearance to pay 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who started their national service in early 2024.
He also mentioned that the Ministry of Finance has granted financial clearance for an extra 13,500 nurses and midwives who were hired and assigned in late 2024. He noted that the clearance, which was initially set to end on December 31, 2024, has been extended to ensure all affected health workers receive their payments.
“We have secured financial clearance for the payment of 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who began their national service in early 2024.”
“We have also secured financial clearance for 13,500 nurses and midwives who were recruited and posted late last year [2024], with their clearance set to expire on December 31, 2024,” he said.
The Health Minister stressed that the government is dedicated to clearing all outstanding salary arrears and enhancing administrative systems to avoid future salary processing delays.
“The Ministry is implementing measures as part of a larger plan to strengthen Ghana’s health system and ensure the well-being of its workforce,” Akandoh assured.
He encouraged all health workers to stay calm and continue their dedicated service while directing any unresolved salary issues through the proper channels for quick resolution.
