A final-year student at Jachie Pramso Senior High School in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, is recovering from injuries, after being reportedly punished by the headmaster for giving her jacket to a fellow student.
Mary Amoako, 19, a General Arts student, claims she was disciplined for assisting a male classmate, who was scolded for not wearing his school uniform.
Mary explained that, the headmaster, had instructed the boy to take off his shirt and go back to the dormitory without it to change into the correct uniform.
After the headmaster confiscated the boy’s shirt and left, Mary felt it was necessary to help him keep warm and maintain his dignity, so she lent him her jacket.
Shortly after, the headmaster saw the boy wearing the jacket and, upon learning that Mary had given it to him, called her in and reportedly whipped her several times, leaving her with visible bruises.
Mary and some classmates, believe the punishment was harsh and unfair, especially since it was for an act of kindness.
This incident, has led to discussions within the school community and beyond, with some questioning the use of corporal punishment in schools, particularly in such situations.
As at the time of this report, neither the headmaster nor the school officials, have commented on the matter.
