The National Teaching Council (NTC) has advised the government that all applicants wanting to enter Colleges of Education should take entrance exams.
The Chairman of the NTC Governing Board, Kwami Alorvi, stated that this action will ensure that only qualified candidates are accepted, while also helping to improve the teacher training and recruitment process.
In an interview on Adom TV, he mentioned that the current system allows nearly all applicants who meet the admission criteria, which he believes does not ensure the best teachers are produced.
Mr. Alorvi also pointed out that implementing entrance exams would help tackle issues of cheating, noting that some people manage to cheat during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, gain admission to Colleges of Education, and eventually become teachers.
He stated that an extra screening process through entrance exams would guarantee that only truly qualified candidates are admitted.
He also mentioned that this recommendation has been forwarded to the Minister of Education for review.
