Delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC\) in the Ayawaso East constituency in the Greater Accra Region, will today January 7, have the benefit to elect their parliamentary candidate.
The winner will come against the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) preferred candidate for the March bye-election, occasioned by the demise of their Member of Parliament (MP) Mahama Nasser Toure.
The MP, died early January 2026, after a short illness at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
Five (5) aspirants picked forms to vie for the contest with leading contenders being the wife of the late MP, Hajia Amina Adams and a former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed.
Ahead of the contest, polls including that of Mussa Dankwa’s Global InfoAnalytics have predicted a straight win for the widow, despite Baba Jamal’s strong experience and influence as a politician and as a former MP for the Akwatia constituency.
The new poll by the firm placed Hajia Adams as the lead candidate.
The data released ahead of the election, says she commands 58 per cent of the voter preference among delegates and party supporters surveyed, making her the favourite to clinch the party’s ticket.
The outcome of the poll, presented on Thursday, February 6, shows a wide margin between Hajia Adams and Baba Jamal. It predicts a largely two-horse race, with Hajia Adams and Baba Jamal. Baba Jamal garnered 32 percent of the valid votes.
The remaining candidates are Muhammed Ramne, Dr Yakubu Azindow and Najib Muhammed Sani who together amassed 10 percent.
The lawyer and the current Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, in 2023 contested the deceased but came second so naturally the expectation is that he would have been the likely winner in this primary.
Reports already suggest that, a good number of MPs on the side of the Majority in Parliament, are rooting for their colleague’s wife, and are supporting her to win the bye-election.
The seat, which houses the popular Nima town has been a stronghold of the NDC with the late MP occupying it from 2013 until his death.
