President John Dramani Mahama, has cut the sod for the start of construction works on the Takoradi–Cape Coast highway dualisation project.
The ceremony, held at Agona Nkwanta in the Western Region, took place on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, as part of the President’s working visit to the region.
The project is part of the government’s Big Push Initiative, which focuses on major infrastructure development across the country. In the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review, ₵13 billion was allocated for 32 key road projects nationwide, including the Takoradi–Cape Coast highway.
President Mahama said the decision to dualise the busy highway was influenced by what he saw during his campaign tours, where citizens complained about poor road conditions and frequent accidents on that stretch.
He explained that the dualisation will reduce accidents, improve travel time, and promote trade between the Western, Central, and Greater Accra Regions. The project will also create many jobs for local workers during construction.
The new road will be a 130-kilometre dual carriageway, with interchanges, pedestrian crossings, and better drainage systems.
Local chiefs and residents welcomed the project, describing it as long overdue. They believe the new road will help boost economic activities, especially in transport, tourism, and trade.
President Mahama assured Ghanaians that his government will continue to improve roads across the country under the Big Push Initiative to make transportation safer and faster for everyone.
