In a high-stakes diplomatic rescue mission, the Mahama administration has quietly extracted former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his wife Samira, and their entourage from the embattled state of Qatar as the Middle East teeters on the brink of all-out war.
The New Republic has gathered that the NPP’s newly-crowned 2028 flagbearer had travelled to Doha for a post-leadership race breather with his family only to find themselves caught in the crosshairs of escalating US-Israeli bombing campaigns rocking the region.
But what could have become a national embarrassment was transformed into a swift rescue operation by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Acting on intelligence that the situation was deteriorating rapidly, Ablakwa issued emergency directives to Ghana’s embassies across the region: locate the former Vice President and get him out fast.
Diplomatic sources tell The New Republic that Ghana’s missions worked undercover with host country authorities to orchestrate the discreet relocation of Bawumia, his wife, and their team from Qatari soil to a safer undisclosed location.
Officials are keeping specific details under lock and key, citing security protocols. But sources describe the movement as “smooth, clinical, and well-coordinated” a far cry from the chaotic evacuations that have plagued other nations caught off-guard by the sudden escalation.
The rescue mission, executed without fanfare or media glare, underscores the government’s determination to protect all Ghanaian citizens caught in harm’s way regardless of their political stripes.
While the Bawumias breathe easier in their new safe haven, the Foreign Ministry remains on high alert. Ablakwa has ordered round-the-clock monitoring of all Ghanaians residing in or transiting through conflict zones across the Middle East.
Embassies have been placed on standby, consular teams mobilised, and emergency protocols activated. The message from Accra is unambiguous: no Ghanaian will be left behind.
For Bawumia, the man who just weeks ago was locked in a fierce battle for the soul of his party, the drama in Doha serves as a stark reminder that in politics as in war the unexpected can strike when least anticipated.
But thanks to a government that moved with speed and precision, a potential tragedy was averted. And the former Vice President lives to fight another day.
