A bigwig of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Tony Aidoo is unsure he will still be alive when the time comes for the party to elect a successor for President John Dramani Mahama.
The 76-year old, believes that, he may not be live to see that moment because he is old and suspects he may by that time be called by his maker.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Radio Gold’s Sena Nombo, the one-time deputy minister and statesman said what he actually wish for is that, he is not alive during the time.
“I don’t know, I don’t want to be here. Maybe by the time it comes to that point, I’ll be gone.” Asked if he did not want to see who succeeds the president he retorted “No”, adding, “I don’t want to… Sena, I’m old oo. I try but I’m old. God has been good to me, but I wouldn’t mind if he takes me today.”
Continuing on the future of the NDC, Dr Aidoo said how the Mahama administration performs will determine what will happen to them when it comes to political power.
In his candid opinion, how the government performs will decided their fate. He said the party will benefit in the event that they perform well.
“But whoever is planning to take over from Mahama, a great deal depends upon the outcome of the Mahama administration,” he said. “If it does well, it inures to the party, and therefore it creates a wind on which the potential or the prospective person can ride”, he added.
His wish going forward, is to see the senior national team, the Black Stars, which is at the top of it group in the World Cup qualifying, remains at the top so that they play in the next tournament next year in US-Canada-Mexico.
“All want to see is to live long to see the Black Stars qualify to the World Cup and see them play well at the World Cup”. Dr Aidoo who says he us a great fan of Arsenal he wished in a short video clip.
His comments come at a time a discussion on who succeeds the president is brewing in the media especially on social media, more than three years to the next general election.
The discussion follows the announcement by the party’s national chairman, Johnson Asiedu-Nketia’s decision to embark on a nationwide tour describing it as a ‘Thank you’ tour.
Popularly known as General Mosquito or Chairman General, Asiedu is said to be interested in the presidential race. He has been criticized for jumping the gun.
Even though he has explained that, his act has everything to do with the last December election, where the NDC was massively voted for, his critics have said he is setting a “very dangerous precedent” with his actions.
His action comes months after the national chairman said in an interview that, what the NDC needs to do now that it has political power is to focus on delivering on it mandate, so that it will be easy for whoever that succeeds the president to retain power.
