In a groundbreaking move, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is poised to shake up road tolling with the introduction of a cutting-edge smart system by the year’s end.
Speaking at a vibrant community gathering for the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway project in Accra on May 13, 2025, the dynamic Road Minister, Mr. Kwame Agbodza, unveiled plans to roll out the innovative tolling system before 2025 bids adieu.
Addressing stakeholders at the project’s National Stakeholder engagement launch, Mr. Agbodza highlighted the obsoleteness of traditional toll booths, citing them as a nuisance for motorists.
Praising the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for aligning with the smart tolling concept, particularly for the highway linking Ghana with Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria, the minister underscored the significance of collaborative planning and public participation.
“Our commitment to transforming the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor into a state-of-the-art six-lane dual carriageway demonstrates our dedication to fostering regional unity, economic prosperity, and sustainable advancement crucial for our nations’ growth,” declared the minister enthusiastically.
Emphasizing the need for local empowerment as the project progresses, he urged fellow Ghanaians to grasp the upcoming opportunities.
Echoing this sentiment, the Managing Consultant and CEO for the Project, Mr. David Nwedu, stressed the importance of involving communities likely to be impacted by the extensive multi-billion-dollar project set to kick off in 2027.
