A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, Lawuratu Musah-Saaka, finds herself entangled in a legal battle after making defamatory remarks against first-time National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament, Blay Nyameke Armarh.
In an unexpected turn of events, the MP has filed a lawsuit against Lawuratu, Jospong Group of Companies, and Ignite Media (parent company of Metropolitan Television) in the Accra High Court, seeking damages of GH₵10,000,000.00.
Lawuratu, a former Deputy Executive Secretary at the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission, expressed regret over the incident, clarifying that she did not intend to tarnish the MP’s reputation. She attributed the misstep to a genuine error during a discussion.
Describing the situation as a potential “Kwasia Bi Nti” scenario, Lawuratu acknowledged the mistake in mentioning the MP’s name instead of referring to a former parliamentary candidate. She emphasized her willingness to retract her statement and issue an apology for the erroneous claim made on a recent episode of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana.
The controversy arose during a conversation revolving around unproven allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering by another parliamentarian. Lawuratu’s unsubstantiated accusations accusing the MP of harboring a large quantity of cocaine and absconding heightened tensions, prompting legal action from the aggrieved party.
The MP swiftly denied the allegations, asserting his innocence and emphasizing his lack of involvement in any illicit activities. He vowed to address the situation through legal channels to clear his name and refute the damaging claims circulating on social media.
In his lawsuit, the MP is seeking substantial damages, including punitive, general, aggravated, and compensatory measures totaling GH₵10,000,000.00. Notably, despite the initial accusations made in the media, the MP refrained from directly naming individuals and limited references to a former parliamentary candidate without specifying the election year
