0ver 200, 000 delegates of the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), are today Saturday, January 31, going to the polls to elect the next flagbearer of the party for the 2028 general election.
In all the 275 constituencies, voting is underway across the country and so far, it has been peaceful with the exception of a few places like Juaboso in the Western North Region, where some delegates were stopped by the police because shirts they wore had party’s colours.
In the Ashanti Region, the stronghold of the party, over 36, 000 delegates in 47 constituencies, are expected to cast their votes. Polls come to a close by 2pm.
The candidates are former vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Ken Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong.
Various polls have tipped the 2024 presidential candidate Dr Bawumia to win the race but with a smaller margin compared to the 2023 race.
He is likely to be given a good run for his money by the former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Assin Central constituency, Agyapong who some polls have also said he is going to carry the day.
This is not the first time the two are meeting in that high stakes contest after the 2023 presidential primary.
Dr Bryan Acheampong has been predicted to place third while the former Education Minister Dr Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong, an engineer coming in that order.
Despite the predictions, the five have expressed confidence of winning the contest and are in high spirits.
Pollster, Maussa Danquah who has correctly been calling outcomes of elections in the past is putting his last bet on Dr Bawumia.
Dr Evans Duah who is a researcher and a member of the party has a different survey which puts Agyapong in the lead.
Prophet El-Bernard has also said he is putting his 27 years of prophetic experience and 18 years of pastoring on Agyapong saying he has already won and he is waiting to face the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
