The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has directed the University of Ghana (UG) to recover funds from senior staff members who benefited from study leave but failed to return to their posts for more than five years.
Appearing before the Committee on Wednesday, November 5, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, revealed that the University has already initiated steps to retrieve the outstanding amounts from the affected staff.
She further indicated that an additional GH₵555,283, described as unearned salaries, is also being recovered. Some of the cases, she said, are being handled with the assistance of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
“We have made some recoveries in this regard, some have been fully paid, others are on payment plans, and in a few cases where we have not been able to reach the individuals, we have sought EOCO’s support,” Professor Amfo explained.
The Committee commended the University’s efforts but urged the institution to speed up the recovery process and strengthen its internal monitoring systems to prevent similar financial irregularities in the future.
