Ghanaian artist Stonebwoy has expressed his opinion on the current discussion regarding the Majority in Parliament’s proposal to change the name of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Accra International Airport.
In a recent interview, the celebrated musician stated that he would back the change if it is based on clear, patriotic reasons and has a positive effect on the country.
He pointed out that the airport was initially called Accra International Airport and that changing it back could be acceptable if it fosters national unity and development.
However, Stonebwoy warned against making a change that does not offer significant advantages for the nation.
Recognizing General Emmanuel Kotoka, the namesake of the airport, the artist emphasized the historical importance linked to his hometown, Alakple, and to Ghana’s past, including the 1966 coup that ousted Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
“This historical context has shaped the discussions about renaming the airport, with some arguing that General Kotoka may not be the best representative for the country,” he remarked.
Still, Stonebwoy insisted that Kotoka’s legacy should be fully acknowledged, noting that there might have been valid reasons for naming the airport after him.
He concluded that if a renaming occurs, it should be for a strong and positive reason that enhances Ghana’s reputation and reinforces the national story.
