Six young individuals have lost their lives, and several others were injured, following a stampede at Accra’s El-Wak Sports Stadium during the Ghana Armed Forces’ 2025/2026 recruitment exercise.
The Ghana Armed Forces stated that the incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. when a sudden surge of applicants bypassed security protocols and forced their way through the gates ahead of the scheduled screening.
The injured have been admitted to the 37 Military Hospital, where medical teams are working to stabilise their condition.
The Armed Forces expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished the injured a full and speedy recovery.
Acting Director General of Public Relations, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, assured the public that investigations are ongoing and updates will be shared in due course.
Sources have revealed that most of the deceased were young women, who sustained severe injuries such as broken necks, legs, and arms before dying.
The account further noted that military police were deployed to manage the screening, but only one side of a double metal gate was opened, forcing the large crowd to squeeze through a single entrance, a factor that contributed to the fatal stampede.
