Ghana Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has issued a strong warning to senior members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging them to cease early maneuvering to replace former President John Dramani Mahama as the party’s flagbearer.
Speaking in a recent interview with Channel One TV, Victor Smith expressed concern over reports of internal lobbying and quiet campaigns aimed at positioning potential successors, despite the party still regrouping after the 2024 general elections.
“It’s too early for anyone to be thinking about replacing Mahama,” Smith emphasized. “The party needs to focus on unity and rebuilding — not on internal power struggles.”
Smith, a long-time ally of Mahama and a respected voice within the NDC, cautioned that such actions could destabilize the party and erode public confidence, especially at a time when the NDC needs to present a united front against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Focus on Party Cohesion
According to Victor Smith, the leadership’s priority should be on consolidating gains, evaluating the 2024 campaign, and strengthening the grassroots — not power tussles for 2028.
“When the time comes, the NDC will make the right decision about leadership. But now is not that time,” he added.
The internal scramble, if left unchecked, could lead to factionalism within the NDC — a situation the party has struggled with in the past. Smith’s call for restraint aims to remind the rank and file that loyalty, patience, and strategic planning must come before personal ambition.
