The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported two cases of Mpox in Accra and is taking immediate action to control the virus and stop it from spreading further.
In a statement on May 15, 2025, the GHS reassured the public that the situation is manageable and there is no cause for alarm.
They are collaborating with the Ministry of Health to implement important health measures to prevent any further spread. Mpox is a viral infection that spreads through close contact with infected people, animals, or contaminated items. Symptoms include skin rashes, fever, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, muscle pain, fatigue, and back pain. Health officials are tracing contacts to find and monitor those who may have been exposed to the confirmed cases. Those identified will be watched for symptoms and provided with medical help if necessary. Additionally, health surveillance in facilities and communities is being enhanced to quickly find and investigate any new or suspected cases. The GHS is also starting public education campaigns to inform people about Mpox. Citizens are advised to practice good hand hygiene, avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, and report any unusual signs to their nearest health center. The statement emphasized that the public health system is prepared and capable of handling the situation, with measures in place to prevent a larger outbreak. The GHS remains dedicated to protecting public health through prompt, coordinated, and clear actions.
