As the rainy season approaches, the Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has issued a critical warning to residents living downstream of the Weija Dam regarding the commencement of water spillage from the dam. The current water level of the dam stands at 45ft, which is only 2ft below the maximum safe operating level of 47ft.
In order to maintain the structural integrity of the dam and prevent any potential disasters, GWL has initiated minimal spillage to regulate the rising water levels. It is imperative that residents downstream take heed of this warning and evacuate the area to ensure their safety.
Furthermore, the Ga West Municipal Assembly has been advised to undertake necessary measures such as desilting the estuary and clearing accumulated debris along the river course to enable the smooth flow of excess water into the sea.
Notable stakeholders including the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), National Security, local chiefs, opinion leaders, and organizations with properties downstream have been informed of the current situation at the dam. Communities likely to be impacted include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and surrounding areas.
The management of GWL urges full cooperation from the public to prevent any potential disasters. Affected residents are urged to remain cooperative and follow all safety instructions issued by the Municipal Assembly to guarantee their safety and avoid any unfortunate incidents.
