The beleaguered Ashanti Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, is expected to return to the police headquarters, in Accra on Tuesday, May 27.
It follows a marathon meeting between him and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), on Monday May 26, after an invitation was extended to him to appear before them.
Known largely as Chairman Wontumi, the loudmouth politician, reported to the police headquarters with his team of lawyers, led by former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame.
His counsel was initially the former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asante Akyem North constituency Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi but he suddenly changed him.
After interrogations that took long hours, his statement was taken, bail granted at undisclosed amount.
Additionally, he was also cautioned on three allegations namely: undertaking mining operations without a license, pollution of water bodies and entering a forest reserve without authorization.
A statement from the CID signed by Head of Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent of Police, Joseph Benefo Darkwah said “Mr Antwi-Boasiako cooperated very well with the police during the course of the investigation, after which he gave his statement to the Police and was granted bail to report to Police at 3pm tomorrow Tuesday 27th May 2025”.
The Kumasi-based politician, brought attention to his invitation to the police after he cried on live radio on Friday May 23 following a botched search of his residence.
The search by operatives of the National Security was aborted after he refused to open his doors. He had indicated in a radio interview that, he had done nothing to warrant the search and called on Ghanaians and NPP to rise. All his accounts have been frozen pending allegations of dealing in illegal mining notoriously known as galamsey.
He claimed in another radio interview that the sanctions that have been imposed on him are heavier than the ones put on Russia by the European Union (EU).
Even though the security agency has remained tight lipped on the matter, reports are that the search warrant was issued for a different reason.
