Kabwe, Zambia
Hon. Given Lubinda, Acting President of the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) was reportedly attacked and abducted earlier today in Kabwe by individuals alleged to be suspected cadres affiliated with the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND)
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred ahead of Lubinda’s scheduled appearance on Phoenix FM’s flagship program “Let the People Talk.” Witnesses claim that approximately 30 individuals arrived in two Toyota Hiace minibuses near the radio station around 08:45 hours. Initially dressed in plain clothes, the group was later seen changing into PF regalia while loitering outside the premises⁽¹⁾⁽²⁾.
Lubinda’s team reportedly canceled the interview over security concerns after the group began to gather aggressively. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the situation escalated quickly, culminating in what some described as a forceful dragging of the PF leader by the alleged cadres. A video clip circulating online appears to show the moment Lubinda was manhandled, though its authenticity and context remain under review.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, Lubinda expressed deep concern over what he termed “a politically motivated attack,” urging the UPND administration to focus on governance rather than intimidation. “It is unfortunate that suspected UPND cadres would resort to such actions. This is not the democracy we fought for,” he said⁽³⁾.
The Zambia Police Service has yet to confirm the incident, stating that no formal report has been lodged as of this afternoon. However, civil society groups and opposition figures have already begun calling for an independent investigation into the matter.
UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa responded cautiously, stating that the party does not condone violence and that any individuals involved should be held accountable through legal channels⁽⁴⁾.
This incident comes amid heightened political tensions in Zambia, with the PF accusing the UPND of using state institutions to target opposition leaders. Lubinda himself has been embroiled in legal battles, including a recent appeal by the state against his acquittal on charges related to alleged financial misconduct⁽⁵⁾.
As the nation awaits further clarification, calls for calm and restraint have echoed across social media and political platforms. The New Republic will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
