As Ghana Fufilles Bilateral Agreement

Ghana has deployed 45 health professionals to Jamaica under the Ghana–Jamaica Bilateral Health Workforce Agreement, a move designed to strengthen healthcare cooperation and foster professional exchange between the two nations.
At a departure ceremony held in Accra was attended by officials from the Ministries of Health and Foreign Affairs, representatives of the Jamaican mission in Ghana, and the departing professionals.
At the event, officials consistently emphasized the importance of upholding Ghana’s reputation through professionalism, diligence, and a deep respect for Jamaican laws and culture.
The Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, Mr. Desmond Boateng described the deployment as a valuable opportunity for the professionals to share their expertise while also learning from their Jamaican counterparts.
He urged them to remain committed to their duties and ensure their conduct reflects positively on Ghana. Cautioning the cohort against political interference, he stated,
“You are going to work in a different country. Please make sure that you don’t meddle in their political activities,” urging them to strictly focus on their professional responsibilities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoed the need for cultural sensitivity, reminding the professionals that practices acceptable in Ghana may not necessarily be tolerated in Jamaica.
Ambassador Agyemang who spoke on behalf of the Minister, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, advised the professionals to develop strong cross-cultural skills and take time to understand their new environment.
He noted that Ghanaian health personnel already enjoy a stellar reputation in Jamaica and challenged the new group to sustain and elevate that positive image. Furthermore, he assured them of institutional support, noting that Ghana’s High Commission to Jamaica, based in Havana, is aware of their arrival and will visit them during their assignment.
The Jamaica’s Honorary Consul to Ghana, Okatakyie Boakye Danquah Ababio hailed the deployment as a significant milestone in the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
He explained that the initiative stems from a bilateral agreement signed in May for the recruitment of Ghanaian health professionals, successfully translating diplomatic commitments into practical cooperation.
Ababio emphasized that the program will deepen people-to-people relations while creating robust avenues for professional exchange.
Welcoming the nurses to Jamaica, he encouraged them to share their knowledge, learn from their Jamaican colleagues, and positively impact their host communities.
“You serve as ambassadors of Ghana,” he told the departing professionals, urging them to carry along their nation’s culture, warmth, and values.
As part of the ceremony, the Jamaican representative presented Ghana-Jamaica Friendship Pins to the health professionals, encouraging them to wear the pins as proud symbols of the enduring bond between the two nations.
Ultimately, the deployment is part of a broader government initiative facilitating global opportunities for Ghanaian health professionals while reinforcing international health-sector partnerships.
Officials expressed strong confidence that the professionals will execute their duties responsibly and further solidify the close ties between Ghana and Jamaica.
