AG Slams Shadow Plea.
Suspended Chief Justice Essaba Torkonoo’s desperate attempt to reclaim her judicial throne faced a major setback today as Ghana’s Attorney General engaged in a fiery showdown with UK legal authorities over the controversial case.
Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine stood firm against pressures from the Bar Council of England and Wales (BCEW) and the Commonwealth Association of Lawyers, adamantly rejecting their call to reinstate the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Essaba Torkornoo.
In a robust response, Dr. Ayine asserted that the government had followed due process in suspending the CJ and would continue to uphold the rule of law. He emphasized that the constitutionally mandated procedures would be completed before any decision on Torkornoo’s future was made.
Prominent Ghanaians, including Dr. Cadman Mills and journalist Manasseh Azuri, condemned the UK lawyers’ intervention as disrespectful and neo-colonialist, urging them to respect Ghana’s sovereignty.
Despite pressures from overseas, the Attorney General’s unwavering stance showcased the government’s dedication to judicial independence and fairness. The saga surrounding Chief Justice Torkonoo continues to unfold amidst political controversies and calls for respect for Ghana’s legal processes.
