Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, an aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed criticisms of the recent wave of MP endorsements in the Eastern Region, describing complaints from rival camps as signs of panic and dwindling support.
Her remarks follow the open endorsement of Dr. Bawumia by 15 out of the 23 NPP Members of Parliament in the region during a two-day campaign tour led by Achiase MP Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo.
Reacting to scepticism on Channel One’s Newsroom on Friday, September 26, Dr. Amoakoh said: “In any contest, when you hear one side beginning to complain a lot and always make excuses, it just means one thing — that that side is losing.”
She rejected claims that the MPs were being manipulated or coerced into endorsing Dr. Bawumia, calling such suggestions disrespectful to their independence.
“I hate it when we create the impression that people are manipulatable or they are like clay in the hands of people to be moulded. I don’t think the MPs are children or they can be manipulated to do A or B. For all of them to boldly come forward and be speaking to their constituents on behalf of His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, I don’t think it’s a small thing.”
Dr. Amoakoh further argued that the reactions from opposing camps only underscored the significance of the endorsements.
“I also see how our opponents will downplay this kind of event. It only means that it really hit them at the core of their campaigns.”
The 15 MPs who declared their support include Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase Ayirebi), Frank Annoh Dompreh (Nsawam Adoagyiri), Sammi Awuku (Akuapem North), and Kingsley Agyemang (Abuakwa South), among others.
Dr. Bawumia is contesting the NPP flagbearership against Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyepong, Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, as the party prepares to select its next presidential candidate.
