Supporters of former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, on Monday staged a dramatic show of solidarity at the Police Headquarters in Accra, as their embattled mentor reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with ongoing investigations.
The group, seen to be Former A-G Boys, arrived at the premises in customized campaign T-shirts boldly inscribed with the slogans “Don’t Defame Dame” on the front and “We Stand with Godfred Dame” on the back.
Videos circulating online shows the group appeared agitated and determined to make a scene. They reportedly tried to push through police security barriers in an attempt to enter the CID premises, creating tension between them and law enforcement personnel.
The situation briefly turned chaotic as the young men, chanting slogans and singing songs of support, provoked the officers by shouting phrases like “Take me to Nsawam!” and “Put handcuffs on me!” in an apparent effort to dramatize their protest and attract public sympathy.
Security personnel, however, maintained their composure, restraining the group and preventing them from breaching the facility’s main gate. The police, despite the provocation, refused to arrest or manhandle the supporters, instead escorting them away from the entrance to restore calm.
Godfred Dame was at the Police Headquarters to assist in investigations following a formal petition filed by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat. Jakpa, who was a key witness in the ongoing ambulance procurement case involving the current Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has accused the former Attorney General of alleged misconduct and attempted fabrication of evidence.
The petition has attracted widespread media attention, with critics and sympathizers sharply divided over its implications for Ghana’s justice system. Mr. Dame, who has consistently maintained his innocence, appeared composed and resolute as he entered the CID facility, accompanied by his legal team and some political allies.
Among those present to show support was Lawyer Kobby Amoah, who spoke to journalists after the encounter.
He emphasized the need for fairness and adherence to due process, reminding the public that the former Attorney General remains innocent until proven guilty.
“We are here to support the former Attorney General, Godfred Dame,” he said. “There is a presumption of innocence in every legal matter. Anyone who has been accused of wrongdoing remains innocent until the courts decide otherwise.”
Amoah further condemned what he described as “trial by media,” cautioning against premature judgment that could undermine the integrity of the justice system.
The “Don’t Defame Dame” campaign has since gained traction on social media, with supporters posting messages of encouragement and others questioning the appropriateness of such a public demonstration at a sensitive legal juncture.
