A leading member of the newly established United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has said that the legal battle initiated by former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo is primarily motivated by financial interests.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme on Saturday, October 18, Mr Owusu claimed that the former Chief Justice, who was recently removed from office, has a case in the ECOWAS Court of Justice, where she is reportedly seeking 10 million dollars in compensation.
According to him, part of the reliefs being sought by the former Chief Justice in her current case in the high court include the restoration of her entitlements.
Also contributing to the discussion, Professor Ransford Gyampo, CEO of Ghana Shippers Authority, appealed to President John Dramani Mahama, to consider granting some form of relief to Justice Torkornoo on humanitarian grounds, despite her removal from office.
However, CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, disagreed with Professor Gyampo’s suggestion, arguing that the matter should be left to follow the due legal process rather than presidential discretion.
Professor Gyampo, nonetheless, cautioned the former Chief Justice to tread cautiously in pursuing her legal challenge, warning that her current approach might not yield the desired results.
What the former Chief Justice is doing amounts to romancing a stone,” he remarked, suggesting that the legal path she has chosen could prove futile
The issue surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal and subsequent legal action continues to dominate public discourse, with many observers calling for a fair resolution that upholds both justice and institutional integrity.
