Agyepong’s Campaign Manager Defects to Bawumia

A seismic shift in Ghana’s opposition politics has rocked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries race, as Ofosu Asamoah former Kade MP and Kwabena Agyepong’s campaign manager has publicly defected to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s camp.

The announcement came at a packed campaign rally, Asamoah’s debut alongside Bawumia since the switch, underscoring deepening fractures within the party ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential primaries.

Asamoah framed his move as a calculated pivot, born of close observation during his tenure with Agyepong. “I’ve watched the campaigns unfold, and things haven’t panned out as hoped,” he told delegates. “Dr. Bawumia offers the NPP’s best shot at reclaiming power in 2028 it’s the strategic path forward.”

His endorsement arrives at a critical juncture, potentially swaying undecided delegates and bolstering Bawumia’s bid to unify the party against the ruling NDC.  Asamoah’s local influence and parliamentary experience could prove invaluable in consolidating support across key constituencies.

This defection not only weakens Agyepong’s momentum but highlights the high-stakes manoeuvring as NPP contenders vie for the flagbearership. With primaries looming, such realignments could tip the balance, reshaping alliances and voter loyalties in the party’s internal power play.
