The Council of Zongo Chiefs in the Ayawaso East Constituency have thrown their weight behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Baba Jamal ahead of the March 3, 2026, by-election amidst the call from the majority caucus in parliament to annul the result due to alleged vote-buying by the candidate-elect during voting.
According to the council, the process was held in a free, fair, and transparent manner which ended peacefully without any of the defeated aspirants complaining of any electoral malfeasance, by the elected candidate.
The council cautioned the majority caucus in parliament to tread cautiously in addressing the issue, so it does not create cracks within the party in the constituency.
Speaking to journalists in a media engagement, Chairman of the council, Chief Fuseini Alhassan Lewis, called on the party’s leadership and government to respect the verdict of the people as they have spoken through the ballot to elect who they want to represent them in the legislature.
He therefore calls on the majority leader Mahama Ayariga and the general public to refrain from making comments of such nature which can cause mayhem in the constituency as they have lived in harmony with each other for centuries.
He therefore appealed to the people of Ayawaso East and the general public to give their support to the elected candidate and his fellow contestants who contested in the primaries as one common people with one ideology to see their people progress in the constituency.
He also pledged to bring all aspirants together under one umbrella to work for a common purpose of developing and transforming the lives of electorates in the constituency
According to him, the majority caucus in Parliament should focus on creating job opportunities for the Zongo youth to gain employment in the various security agencies or support them to become entrepreneurs, but not to create cracks within the party in the constituency as the people of Nima remain united and will not allow anyone to bring division amongst them.
He cautioned the majority caucus and party hierarchy not to interfere in their issues as they have their own ways of handling issues within the constituency whenever the need arises.
Chief Lewis therefore urged candidate-elect Baba Jamal, EQS, to come and continue the late MP’s work, but not neglect it so the constituency suffers.
